This Is Me Blogging About Blogging

The other day I blogged about my promise to blog everyday, here is the post: Joe’s Gonna Help Me Keep Goals In 2010

You may think that blogging everyday is an easy thing to promise, but let me assure you, for me it’s huge.  In fact, it is such a big thing for me that I broke my promise on day 2 already. Nice going Adin!

Many people give up on a goal altogether when they don’t stick to it perfectly, but I’m not going to do that. I know how important blogging is to the success of my mission so I am persevering, no matter what!

It’s weird, isn’t it? Living for 5 years without spending money doesn’t scare me but blogging does! I’m not sure what’s so scary about blogging but it just is. Maybe scary is too strong a word. Maybe it is just that blogging (or writing in general) doesn’t come naturally to me, well not yet any way. I’m hoping that as I do it more regularly it will get easier.

I guess some things comes naturally to people, and some things don’t. Maybe writing will never come easy to but I am sure I can better, with practice. I flippen hope so, let’s see what happens :-)

I am much more comfortable talking than writing. I’m hoping when my Flip video camera arrives my blogging experience will change drastically. I reckon I will find it much easier to capture memorable moments as they happen on camera and just upload the videos.  I’ve done a few videos with my blackberry and with other people’s cameras and I found it quite easy to do. With a little editing practice too I am sure I can put out some pretty cool videos in the not too distant future.

I would like to say thanks to my friend Steve Jones who bought me the Flip camera. Steve has been telling me for a while to do videos and I promise to do his gift justice. Oh, he also takes the 4th spot on My Right Arm for his contribution to my experiment…thanks Steve.

Still don’t know what My Right Arm is…well I better get onto blogging about that shouldn’t I? In the meantime, check out this video.

(if you are reading this as a note on Facebook, you can watch the video on YouTube, here is the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FqqVfAmLPQ or on Facebook, here is the link http://www.facebook.com/adinvanryneveld?v=app_2392950137&ref=name#/video/video.php?v=261670015714

I am feeling better already, sharing feels good,  thanks for listening :-) LOL, sounds like I am in a support group or something – “Hi my name is Adin and I suck at blogging!”

Cool, I got this one in before midnight so it counts, I BLOGGED TODAY!!!!!

I guess, you’ll hear from me sooner rather than later.

Much love

Adin

Wanting To Drink This NYE But Don’t Want To Drive? I’ll Be Your Designated Driver…

Picture the scene: You and your mates want to go out for a night of fun, mischief, shenanigans, tom-foolery or maybe even some downright mayhem. But there’s a problem. You don’t want to get caught drunk driving, have an accident or worse. Sometimes the price we pay to party is pretty steep and it may be more than our credit that gets crunched!

Why not assign a designated driver? Seems fair enough, right? One of your crew takes one for the team so the rest of you can have a stress free party.  But how do you decide who has to stay sober so the rest of you can ‘Phuza’ yourselves? You can only play Rock Paper Scissors so many times, right?

Well, I’m making it real easy for…I’ll be your DESIGNATED DRIVER! You see, I have been a non-drinker for almost 8 years and it just doesn’t make sense to me that people drink and drive…it’s just not worth it. I can’t think of a better act of friendship than getting you home safely.

I’ve wanted to do this for a while and now I’m finally doing it. Because I’m so excited about this project I’m starting immediately. What better night to have a designated driver than New Years Eve? Wouldn’t you and your mates love to celebrate the end of this decade without one of you having to ‘miss out’? With me as your DESIGNATED DRIVER there will be no need for ‘Ching Chong Cha’ tomorrow before you head out for you the party of the decade!

How does it work?

  • I drive my scooter to your house
  • We get into your car and go pick up each of your friends (max 5 people in the car)
  • I drive you to where you want to go and we party together (yes, me too)
  • When you want to leave I drop each of you safely back at home
  • I then drive home on my scooter

my scooter, ain't she cute?

my scooter, ain't she cute?

What’s in it for me?

Feed me, hydrate me and get me into where ever you are going on the night…that’s all! As you probably know, I’ve committed living without money for 5 years, so this is a way for me to keep that promise.

Simply right? If this sounds like the idea of the decade, and you want me as your DESIGNATED DRIVER this NYE, please get in touch with me ASAP.

THIS OFFER IS VALID FOR PARTY PEOPLE IN CAPE TOWN ONLY.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Much love and take care.

News From Jozi

Acting like a Cape Townian in Joburg / 5FM’ing / Carte Blanche / Travelling without money

I’ve been in Joburg since Saturdays and haven’t made too much of a noise about it. I’ve mainly been hanging out (chilling out) with my friend Jess at her parent’s AMAZING house in Wendywood (seriously, it’s ridiculous…her mom should have her own interior design show on Vuzu or something!) and doing a bit of catch up on emails and stuff.

Apart from that, Telana and I went to the ‘5 seconds to party’ party at the Carlton Roller Rink. You’d think that roller skating was would be easier than roller blading but you’d be wrong! Me and some 5fm jocks were not so comfortable on the rink…LOL

Was great to finally meet Claire from 5fm after many emails and phone calls – thanks for hooking me up with the tickets.

Then this morning we had a big meeting with Joy, a producer for Carte Blanche. Remember I wrote about my friend Lisa putting me in touch with her but saying I could only contact her after the 8th? [read post here] Well good thing I was in Joburg cos I got to meet her in person. The 3 of us (Joy, Telana & I) had delicious coffee at the Design Centre (I think it’s called) and talked about our stories.

It may be a little while before I am on Carte Blanche so don’t get too excited. Joy thinks (and I have to agree with her) that it is a little too early in my adventure for Carte Blance. However, here comes the great news, she loves Telana’s onematchstick project and is going to pitch it next year…HOW AWESOME is that? YAY!!!!! You see, more proof that if you are friends with me…good things happen!

Now, Jess and I are planning the latest no money mission - driving from Joburg to Cape Town without money. I spoke to the programme manager of 5FM, Vukile, and I hope to have 5FM to regular check ins with us so we can update you guys on our journey – more on this to follow…

Oh shit, in case you were wondering how I even got to Joburg without using money, watch this video:

UBUNTU GIRL – Travelling Around South Africa Without Money

A few weeks my friend Tess Neale sent me a link about a woman after my own heart.

Sonja Kruse is putting Ubuntu to the test in the 21 st century

meet Sonja, Ubuntu Girl

meet Sonja, Ubuntu Girl

Tess, who has a habit of sending awesome links, sent me a link to an article about Sonja’s awesome adventure.

Sonja is on a mission to prove that Ubuntu is still going strong in South Africa.  In October this year, she began a year long journey in which she will be travelling around South Africa without any money. She left her job, GAVE her car away and hit the proverbial road with R1o0 in her pockets…YOU GO GIRL!
[The full article on Sonja can be read here]

Keep updated on Sonja’s progress through her blog: www.letterdash.com/skruse or contact her on 072 308 8116 If you are a Facebook junkie like I am then you will probably wanna add her on Facebook like I did [her profile page is here]

When I started my adventure to live without money for 5 years I thought I was doing something pretty unique, but since I started, I have met and been told about other amazing people who are also doing some really awesome, inspiring and ‘out the box’ stuff! Sonja is only one these people. The other day I wrote about a woman in Germany who has been living without money for 13 years!  [read that post here]
Watch out for posts on the other awesome peeps I am talking about!

Hey, if you know about anyone that is up to something really cool (especially without money), PLEASE let me know about it…shot!

Much love

I Love It When People Tell Me I Won’t Reach My Goal!

On Friday I went to the 27Dinner with Telana and Mongezi.  I love telling people about about my crazy ideas and I was really looking forward to seeing how the geeks would respond. I got one response in particular that I did not expect!

The gentleman featured in the video below was fine with me living without money for 5 years…but when he heard about my other goal he was rather skeptical to say the least! If you don’t know what I am talking about let me refresh your memory.

Living without money doesn’t mean I can’t earn money, it just means I can’t use any of it for my own needs…I have to give it away. In fact, my idea to live without money evolved out of my idea to give as much money away as possible. A few months ago, friend suggested to me over coffee that I should make my goal measurable – so I came up with a number…a really really BIG number!

R555 555 555.55

That’s right! Five hundred and fifty five million, five hundred and fifty five thousand, five hundred and fifty five rand and fifty five cents!

When I told the guy in this video that I was going to give so much money away…he didn’t quite believe me. Now that is quite understandable, I don’t expect many people to believe me (sometimes I even doubt myself…not often but it doesn’t happen often…LOL). What did surprise me though, was the degree of his disbelief and the lengths he threatened to go to if (and when) I do succeed. Intrigued…

I hope you enjoyed this video…there will be more to come. Thanks Telana for playing camera person!

The Beancounter Has Been Taking Lank Good Care Of Me

My new friend, Marnus Broodryk – the Beancounter - picked me up from Telana’s house last night at about 7pm. I met his colleague Christo and some of his other friends in Joburg.

We then went to have some aweome pizza at Pannerrottis and had a reasonably early night. We did this because Marnus insisted on waking up dawn’s crack to get on the road to Harrismith. (by dawn’s crack I mean 4h50am for me…even  earlier for Marnus & Christo – I am still trying to work out if it is an Afrikaans thing, or an accountant thing or both but these okes are organised!)

Just out of Joburg we stopped for a brekkie at the Total garage…YUM!

Now I am sitting in one of the spare offices at the premises in Harrismith and guess what…I AM USING THE INTERNET - hallelujah!!!!! And, they are even gonna try fix my laptop for me after the launch tonight.

Ek is baie dankbaar vir hul gasvryheid. (I am very grateful for their hospitality)

Now, I reckon tonight is gonna be alot of fun…but before we do that we are visiting a home for handicapped children and an old age home – these Beancounters have a heart too – my kind of people!

If you want to know more about them, you can check out their fan page on Facebook or go to their website

I Just Won The Perfect Competition

A few weeks ago my friend Mia sent me a link to a 5Fm competition. It was part of their birthday campaign in partnership with Youngblood5, 5Fm’s CSI project.
The prize…R90 000 to give away to Youngblood5 charities! It’s like this competition was made for me!All you had to do was share your birthday wish on their website, here is the link

http://www.5fm.co.za/campaigns-folder/youngblood/blog/5fm2019s-birthday#comments

Anyway, I got an email from Claire Conchar at 5Fm yesterday telling me that I won! This is what…this is what I wrote on the YB5 site:

Posted by Philanthropreneur on 21 October 2009 09:38 AM

Yoh! Love this competition! Now I am not sure if I should give my personal wishes or wishes for this beautiful country of ours…OK, I give both :-)

My wish for South Africa is that we ALL work together to transform HUMAN RIGHTS into HUMAN REALITIES. We have this amazing constitution that is the envy of the world but to many it is nothing more than a piece of paper.

My wish for me on 5FM’s birthday is a Macbook…PLEASE!!!!! Now I actually wish for many things right now but this would help me the most. My wish for me long term is to succeed on my mission to live for 5 years without money!!!!!

Happy birthday 5FM

Much love
Adin

Tomorrow I will find out which charities I can choose from…I am so excited.

Will you help me choose?

Today Is My 6 Month NO MONEY-VERSARY!!!!!

At exactly 5:55pm it will be exactly 6 months since I began this adventure of living without money!!!!!
I am really stoked, relieved, inspired, amazed and grateful right now…you can not imagine what this feels like!

At the beginning, people thought I was crazy, they still thought I was crazy a few months in and I am sure there are a lot of people who still think I am crazy so what…I’ve done it.

The thing I’m most stoked about is that when I started I had no idea how I was going to pull this off and I still managed to make it this far!

So, now I only have 4 and a half years to go…EASY PEASY!

There are so many people that I could (and should) thank right now but I don’t have the time this minute. You know who you are – my wonderful friends who have contributed to and followed this adventure of mine – I am truly grateful!

Things can only get better from here right?

Thanks again and much love to you all!
