For those of you who know me well, you will know that I am a bit of a workshop junkie Put it this way, I have done my fair share of workshops, courses and trainings all in the name of making myself a more effective human being so that I can make a greater contribution with my life.

Recently I assisted on a workshop called thePoint presented by Stephen Norval of truePoint Consciousness Development.

What made this is so special is that it was held at the offices of Consciousness Coaching in Cape Town. Consciousness Coaching is where I trained as Consciousness Coach and is an organisation that I am truly grateful for.

We are now experiencing a beautiful co-creation between truePoint and Consciousness Coaching and I cannot wait to see where this might unfold.

FINALLY I have given some money away. It took me over a year but better late than never right.

When I started this experiment I thought it was the best way to make money to give away. But I found that it was much harder than I thought to live without spending money and I still haven’t quite got the hang of it. Most of my energies have gone into my own survival and trying to find people to play this game with me.

I recently realised that I need to give people the option of trading with me or paying me for my services. When they pay me 50% will be given away to a cause chosen by the person who pays me. The other 50% I am giving to my parents to say thank you for looking after me for many years as an adult. This isn’t going to rent (that would be spending money) it will be going towards a long term home make over project. I know it is the thing that my parents most want and need. It is high time I started ‘paying them back’ for all they have done for me.

So, now onto Ouma Emily.

A while ago I negotiated a coaching contract with a lady by the name of Desiree Potgieter. She was originally assigned to me as a client as part of her Consciousness Coaching training course, but she chose to continue with me as her coach. We agreed on R3000 for 6 sessions.

When I told her about the what I do with money when it comes she told me that she wanted the money to go to an elderly person in need. Not to an organisation, she wanted the money to go to someone in particular and she challenged me to find the right person. Thanks Desiree for helping me make the contribution I want to make!

Being a social media guy with a pretty healthy network I decided to crowdsource it by putting up a Facebook status and tweeting about it. Within 2 minutes I got my first hit and 12 minutes later Princess Julia Malema (not the name her momma gave her) told me about Ouma Emily.

Don’t you just love Facebook?!?!

I asked Julia to help me help Emily and then we started talking and making plans. Emily is exactly the kind of person that Desiree wanted to help. She is 80 years old and Julia tells me she lives alone and is really struggling financially without much help from her family. When she called Ouma Emily to give her the good news she had to sit down because she couldn’t believe something like this was happening to her and even started to cry. I am so happy that Julia helped me the perfect person to receive this help.

I arranged for my dad, Graham van Ryneveld, to send the money to Julia by EFT (my dad is my accountant and will all handle all money transactions like this for me seeing as though I don’t have a bank account!).

But, I didn’t just want to leave it there, I wanted to be involved with this. I wanted to meet Emily and be there when she got her new stuff. Besides, I had only know known online as well and was really keen to meet her too!

So, this morning Julia and Emily met me at the Pick n Pay in Milnerton. Emily brought a shopping list and the biggest smile you ever saw! She told me how grateful she was for this surprise. She said that when she turned 80 in February there was no money to celebrate at all, so this was her birthday present!

First we went to Pick n Pay and got her a nice big trolley full of stuff for her home.

Then it was off to Pep to get some shoes, slippers, clothes, a towel and some other nice things.

I can’t tell you how great it was to see Ouma Emily so happy. She was like a little kid at Christmas! I can’t wait to help someone like her again soon!

Over the weekend I was talking to my new friend Janet Chadwick on skype. Remember her, she is the one who just got me airtime? [read that post here]

One of the things she challenged me on was why I didn’t have a wishlist. What I said to her was that ironically, even though I am the No Money Guy, asking for help is hard for me. But, I have a goal that I set with my coach Mandi Wyngaard, and that is to have all my basic needs met for 3 months by the end of September!

Now, in order for me to reach that goal 2 things need to happen.

1. I need to be more valuable to more people. For this I am in the process of setting up blogs, fan pages and twitter accounts for each of my services. I need to run like a business, just a bit different from most
2. People need to know what I need. Seems simple right? But it is a whole year and 4 months into this experiment and the first time I am putting out a wish list!

Mini Makeover for my room
I want to do a make over of my room at my parents house so that they can make money out of it after I leave. This is long overdue, the room is the same as it was when I was a kid!

This is something that is very important to me. My parents have supported me more than most kids need supporting. After I had my breakdown almost 10 years ago they took me in and said ‘Take as long as you need to get back on your feet.’ Trouble is I am still here. I can see how my being here as impacted on their financial situation so I would like to use my way of life to support them as well as me.
This will be a big project and basically everything that could be done to improve a house I would like to do. I have asked my parents to give me a wishlist which I will post soon too.

Before I go I need to share something. In the last couple of days I really have been taking on stuff that I have struggled with and resisted for some time. It feels really good, I’m not gonna lie! Try it for yourself, it isn’t so scary

Yesterday I did 2 things that are WAY out of my comfort zone. The main thing I want to share is that I may never have done them without some help.

In my last post I spoke about clearing years worth of clutter in my room. In this post I will be talking about creating a Powerpoint Presentation for a talk I am giving at the Ubuntu Spirit Conference hosted by the Novalis Ubuntu Institute

Now, you might wondering “What is so hard about creating a PowerPoint presentation for a talk?” Well, firstly…I have never actually used Powerpoint. (yes it’s true, don’t judge!) I have spoken publicly a few times but I have really just gone up with an idea of what I would like to get across and just spoken from the heart.

Secondly, I am talking about my dream project, Nu-buntu. This dream has been evolving in my mind for almost a decade, and let’s just say that the idea has grown really freaking big in that time! I haven’t ever quite had the courage to talk about it publicly because I didn’t think it was ready to be shared (or maybe I thought I was wasn’t ready to share it). It’s the kind of idea that keeps you up at night, is always there for you when you have nothing better to think about and also there when you have many other things you could be thinking about.

Don’t get me wrong, the idea makes perfect sense to me, it’s my baby. I have struggled quite a bit to get it across to others though I guess I have had the luxury of 10 years with the idea, I know it quite well.

Hence my challenge with this talk, I only have 15 minutes to share my idea! But, luckily for me…yesterday I got some expert help!

In the last 2 months I have bumped into my friend Zane Green more than a few times. What makes it a little weirder is that I have bumped into him at the same Mugg & Bean in Royal Ascot near where I stay, even though Zane stays in Fresnaye. The last time he said, “I wonder why the Universe keeps doing this, how are we meant to support each other?”

Zane and I are both coaches trained in a brand of coaching called Consciousness Coaching, developed by Marc Steinberg. His latest venture is called Happivate (don’t you just love that name?!?!) which is a website with resources and products that will support you in creating the life you love.

Later that day it hit me! The Universe wanted Zane to help me create an awesome presentation so I can share my dream with probably the biggest audience it’s had to date. In return, the Universe wants me to help Zane use social media to promote his amazing new business and maybe build a team to take it to the next level.

SWEET DEAL RIGHT?

So, cut to last night…

I met Zane at his house at 5pm. He sat me down and started asking me some questions. Basic questions that I hadn’t really asked myself before. After some time he got me to connect to what Nu-buntu really means to me. And more importantly, what I wanted to get across in this particular talk.

The theme of the Conference is Ubuntu: From Theory into Practice, so it was very important for me to express Nu-buntu as a real possibility and not just nice idea.

Zane helped me to strip it down, without losing any of it’s power. But mostly importantly it was still my vision.
Then in no time flat he whipped up a PowerPoint Presentation that I would NEVER have been able to do on my own!

In a similar way to what happened with my friend Sam helping me create order in my room, I think just having Zane work with me on this was valuable. But it goes further than that. Zane and I have done our Wealth Dynamics profiles. Zane is a Creator and I am a Supporter.

As a creator, this came easy to Zane but not to me. As a supporter building and nurturing relationships come easy to me. So, I guess I followed my profile well by realising that I have a creator in my tribe and found a meaningful way for him to do what I am not good at.

Now Zane is great at creating, but is an extrovert. This is where I am going to help him. Right now, it is time for Zane to build his team to take his business to the next level. First step in that is filling the position of Junior Marketing Manager and I’m gonna help him do that!

Just so you know, Zane is AWESOME…you will love working with him. He really is a wonderful guy and is passionate about what he does and making a difference in people’s lives.

So, the moral of the story…STOP TRYING TO DO THINGS ON YOUR OWN! Check your network, maybe you know someone who can help you. Maybe you can help someone you know. Do it, you will be glad you did.

Yesterday I did 2 things that are WAY out of my comfort zone, and I would never have been able to do them on my own!

The first one was spending the morning creating order in my room at my parents house. Now, for some of you that might not sound so scary but for me it really was hectic! Here’s why:

My room has been in such a state for so freaking long, it just seemed impossible to take on. You know how the longer you leave something the scarier it gets? Well, this is a perfect example of that
I have been putting it off for as long as I can remember but I have finally realised I needed help. Also, when I moved back home after my bipolar drama, it was always meant to be temporary, I never wanted to settle in. That was almost 10 years ago! So I figured it was high time I got my shit together, and luckily for me I had my friend Samantha Brady to help me!

Sam has a business called Consciously Living and she is passionate about supporting people to live consciously. Creating order in one’s environment is just one of the things she teaches people how to do.

I just want to be clear, Sam didn’t do the work for me! But just having her there was what made difference. Not only could she support me in how to do it and give me the courage to get rid of what was no longer required – she held me in my commitment to do it. On my own, I very easily could have found something else to do or simply bought into the old ‘this is too hard for me’ story!

I think there was another reason that made it possible for me to do this. Simply having another person with me was great, but the fact is Sam is naturally skilled at things that I am not. Sam and I have both done our Wealth Dymanics Profiles, she is a Mechanic and I am Supporter. I a nutshell, Sam’s value lies in creating systems and figuring out how to do things most effectively. I am a Supporter, my value lies in relationships and helping people find the other people they need to create the results they are after. Check out this link for more info on the different profiles

So my advice to you is if you need help, ask. If you can help, help. Stop trying to do everything on your own.

I am pretty good when it comes to social media, but I am still a little out of my depth when it comes to websites and blogs etc.

My friend Violetta Pleshakova just put up a Facebook status saying:

Decided – I’m getting myself a website soon. In September. Now could somebody tell me please what are the best options for hosting and registering a domain name…

I really wish I could tell her more, but the truth is that all I really know is that there are many options she can choose from. I know she wants a “.com” domain and that she has someone helping her with the design and the development, she just has to sort out her hosting and registration.

Any experts out there with suggestions?

I am in the process of setting up new pages as well, but I luckily have a friend who is giving me the hosting as part of a trade exchange. His name is Lourens van Dyk and his business is called Blue Hammer Promotions.

I am also registering my domains with a service called ZA Nic where you can get a .za.net domain for free, provided you have your hosting set up already.

The theme of the evening is ‘Ubuntu: From Theory to Practice’ and will feature 5 guest speakers presenting their inspiring ideas on how to bring Ubuntu into practice…and guess who is one of them?

Ok, you worked it out..it’s me! And I will be talking about Nu-buntu. This is quite a big deal because it will be the first time I am really presenting this idea. Truth be told, I haven’t really fully shared everything online yet.

Well, if you are like me then you know that when the Universe presents an opportunity you take it right? So that is why when Gabriel Gonsalves from the Novalis Ubuntu Institute I knew I had to say yes. The time for thinking has come and gone, now is the time for action!

This year’s presenters include: Lesedi Makhurane, organizational development specialist; Barbara Nussbaum, author and teacher; Eames Demetrios, the creator of Kymaerica and Adin Van Ryneveld, the creator of the ‘Nu-Buntu’ Tribe. The event will also feature the live performance of Nic Paton and his Sout Project. Additional speakers will be announced in the next few days and posted on the website.

The first Ubuntu Spirit Award will honor a person in our Ubuntu Community whose contribution to society demonstrates and embodies the Spirit of Ubuntu and will be presented during the conference.
