You might be surprised to learn that there are already entire communities of people using hybrid economic systems that incorporate national money and community currencies. The Community Exchange System is one of the best!

I'm currently registered to The Cape Town Talent Exchange, here in South Africa, where we use Talents as our unit of exchange.

How it works is really simple:

• Create an account.

• Then trade your products and services with those of the community. And find products and services that you require.

• The currency gets created by the community when a trade is made.

• When you find something on the exchange that you want: You let the person that made listing know you want their resources, you make the trade and they debit your Talent account. You now have a responsibility within the community to make your products or services available to those that require them.

• And, when any member of the community wants something you've listed on the exchange: They contact you to let you know they want your resources, you make the trade and you debit their account. You now have the opportunity to spend those Talents back into the community.

In this way the system is always balanced and relies entirely on actual value. However, the CES is currently a hybrid one and does allow for any transaction to incorporate some national money, up to a max of 50%, for those still making the transition toward utilizing only community currency and the resource economy, like i've done.

What I reckon is really cool about the Community Exchange System is that it's a network of local resource based economies from all over the world. And if I wanted to I could trade with any person in any exchange anywhere on the planet!
