Ouma Emily Goes Shopping!

Hi Friends, I am so happy right now!

FINALLY I have given some money away. It took me over a year but better late than never right.

When I started this experiment I thought it was the best way to make money to give away. But I found that it was much harder than I thought to live without spending money and I still haven’t quite got the hang of it. Most of my energies have gone into my own survival and trying to find people to play this game with me.

I recently realised that I need to give people the option of trading with me or paying me for my services. When they pay me 50% will be given away to a cause chosen by the person who pays me. The other 50% I am giving to my parents to say thank you for looking after me for many years as an adult. This isn’t going to rent (that would be spending money) it will be going towards a long term home make over project. I know it is the thing that my parents most want and need. It is high time I started ‘paying them back’ for all they have done for me.

So, now onto Ouma Emily.

A while ago I negotiated a coaching contract with a lady by the name of Desiree Potgieter. She was originally assigned to me as a client as part of her Consciousness Coaching training course, but she chose to continue with me as her coach. We agreed on R3000 for 6 sessions.

When I told her about the what I do with money when it comes she told me that she wanted the money to go to an elderly person in need. Not to an organisation, she wanted the money to go to someone in particular and she challenged me to find the right person. Thanks Desiree for helping me make the contribution I want to make!

Being a social media guy with a pretty healthy network I decided to crowdsource it by putting up a Facebook status and tweeting about it. Within 2 minutes I got my first hit and 12 minutes later Princess Julia Malema (not the name her momma gave her) told me about Ouma Emily.

Don’t you just love Facebook?!?!

I asked Julia to help me help Emily and then we started talking and making plans. Emily is exactly the kind of person that Desiree wanted to help. She is 80 years old and Julia tells me she lives alone and is really struggling financially without much help from her family. When she called Ouma Emily to give her the good news she had to sit down because she couldn’t believe something like this was happening to her and even started to cry. I am so happy that Julia helped me the perfect person to receive this help.

I arranged for my dad, Graham van Ryneveld, to send the money to Julia by EFT (my dad is my accountant and will all handle all money transactions like this for me seeing as though I don’t have a bank account!).

But, I didn’t just want to leave it there, I wanted to be involved with this. I wanted to meet Emily and be there when she got her new stuff. Besides, I had only know known online as well and was really keen to meet her too!

So, this morning Julia and Emily met me at the Pick n Pay in Milnerton. Emily brought a shopping list and the biggest smile you ever saw! She told me how grateful she was for this surprise. She said that when she turned 80 in February there was no money to celebrate at all, so this was her birthday present! :-)

First we went to Pick n Pay and got her a nice big trolley full of stuff for her home.

Then it was off to Pep to get some shoes, slippers, clothes, a towel and some other nice things.

I can’t tell you how great it was to see Ouma Emily so happy. She was like a little kid at Christmas! I can’t wait to help someone like her again soon!

Thank you to Princess Julia Malema for stepping up and helping me make this happen. And so great to finally meet you in 3D!

Out Of My Comfort Zone With The Help Of A Friend.

Hello Friends,

Yesterday I did 2 things that are WAY out of my comfort zone. The main thing I want to share is that I may never have done them without some help.

In my last post I spoke about clearing years worth of clutter in my room. In this post I will be talking about creating a Powerpoint Presentation for a talk I am giving at the Ubuntu Spirit Conference hosted by the Novalis Ubuntu Institute

Now, you might wondering “What is so hard about creating a PowerPoint presentation for a talk?” Well, firstly…I have never actually used Powerpoint. (yes it’s true, don’t judge!) I have spoken publicly a few times but I have really just gone up with an idea of what I would like to get across and just spoken from the heart.

Secondly, I am talking about my dream project, Nu-buntu. This dream has been evolving in my mind for almost a decade, and let’s just say that the idea has grown really freaking big in that time! I haven’t ever quite had the courage to talk about it publicly because I didn’t think it was ready to be shared (or maybe I thought I was wasn’t ready to share it). It’s the kind of idea that keeps you up at night, is always there for you when you have nothing better to think about and also there when you have many other things you could be thinking about.

Don’t get me wrong, the idea makes perfect sense to me, it’s my baby. I have struggled quite a bit to get it across to others though :-) I guess I have had the luxury of 10 years with the idea, I know it quite well.

Hence my challenge with this talk, I only have 15 minutes to share my idea! But, luckily for me…yesterday I got some expert help!

In the last 2 months I have bumped into my friend Zane Green more than a few times. What makes it a little weirder is that I have bumped into him at the same Mugg & Bean in Royal Ascot near where I stay, even though Zane stays in Fresnaye. The last time he said, “I wonder why the Universe keeps doing this, how are we meant to support each other?”

Zane and I are both coaches trained in a brand of coaching called Consciousness Coaching, developed by Marc Steinberg. His latest venture is called Happivate (don’t you just love that name?!?!) which is a website with resources and products that will support you in creating the life you love.

Later that day it hit me! The Universe wanted Zane to help me create an awesome presentation so I can share my dream with probably the biggest audience it’s had to date. In return, the Universe wants me to help Zane use social media to promote his amazing new business and maybe build a team to take it to the next level.

SWEET DEAL RIGHT?

So, cut to last night…

I met Zane at his house at 5pm. He sat me down and started asking me some questions. Basic questions that I hadn’t really asked myself before. After some time he got me to connect to what Nu-buntu really means to me. And more importantly, what I wanted to get across in this particular talk.

The theme of the Conference is Ubuntu: From Theory into Practice, so it was very important for me to express Nu-buntu as a real possibility and not just nice idea.

Zane helped me to strip it down, without losing any of it’s power. But mostly importantly it was still my vision.
Then in no time flat he whipped up a PowerPoint Presentation that I would NEVER have been able to do on my own!

In a similar way to what happened with my friend Sam helping me create order in my room, I think just having Zane work with me on this was valuable. But it goes further than that. Zane and I have done our Wealth Dynamics profiles. Zane is a Creator and I am a Supporter.

As a creator, this came easy to Zane but not to me. As a supporter building and nurturing relationships come easy to me. So, I guess I followed my profile well by realising that I have a creator in my tribe and found a meaningful way for him to do what I am not good at.

Now Zane is great at creating, but is an extrovert. This is where I am going to help him. Right now, it is time for Zane to build his team to take his business to the next level. First step in that is filling the position of Junior Marketing Manager and I’m gonna help him do that!

Just so you know, Zane is AWESOME…you will love working with him. He really is a wonderful guy and is passionate about what he does and making a difference in people’s lives.

So, the moral of the story…STOP TRYING TO DO THINGS ON YOUR OWN! Check your network, maybe you know someone who can help you. Maybe you can help someone you know. Do it, you will be glad you did.

I Can See Clearly Now The Clutter Has Gone!

Hi Friends,

Yesterday I did 2 things that are WAY out of my comfort zone, and I would never have been able to do them on my own!

The first one was spending the morning creating order in my room at my parents house. Now, for some of you that might not sound so scary but for me it really was hectic! Here’s why:

My room has been in such a state for so freaking long, it just seemed impossible to take on. You know how the longer you leave something the scarier it gets? Well, this is a perfect example of that :-)
I have been putting it off for as long as I can remember but I have finally realised I needed help. Also, when I moved back home after my bipolar drama, it was always meant to be temporary, I never wanted to settle in. That was almost 10 years ago! So I figured it was high time I got my shit together, and luckily for me I had my friend Samantha Brady to help me!

Sam has a business called Consciously Living and she is passionate about supporting people to live consciously. Creating order in one’s environment is just one of the things she teaches people how to do.

I just want to be clear, Sam didn’t do the work for me! But just having her there was what made difference. Not only could she support me in how to do it and give me the courage to get rid of what was no longer required – she held me in my commitment to do it. On my own, I very easily could have found something else to do or simply bought into the old ‘this is too hard for me’ story!

I think there was another reason that made it possible for me to do this. Simply having another person with me was great, but the fact is Sam is naturally skilled at things that I am not. Sam and I have both done our Wealth Dymanics Profiles, she is a Mechanic and I am Supporter. I a nutshell, Sam’s value lies in creating systems and figuring out how to do things most effectively. I am a Supporter, my value lies in relationships and helping people find the other people they need to create the results they are after. Check out this link for more info on the different profiles

So my advice to you is if you need help, ask. If you can help, help. Stop trying to do everything on your own.

Time To Say Thanks For Airtime!

Hi Friends,

One of my most challenging things to handle as the No Money Guy is getting airtime for my beloved Blackberry.

I know I should be over this by now but I still have difficulty asking for help. It shouldn’t be a problem but my ego does still get the better of me sometimes :-) Trading is great but there is still so much space in the world for people to be kind to each other just because they can. So am committed to opening myself to giving and receiving in that way more and more.

So, in the last few weeks there have been a few instances where exactly that has happened.

My friend Jacques Maritz was the first to surprise me about 2 weeks ago. He just decided to give me some airtime. What makes that so cool is that he and I have never done a trade or worked on anything together. In fact, we only met once at my friend Dawn Penny’s birthday party and since then we have been friends on Facebook. I guess, he just likes what I am up to and wants to support me.

So, Jacques….I would like to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU for giving me airtime, I really needed it. I had only a few days before I would have lost my blackberry subscription and then I would have cried!!! And, I know you don’t want anything in return but if you can think of a way that I can help you then please let me know:-)

Then, just the other day I made a new friend called Janet Chadwick. She heard about me from another Facebook friend called Soshanna Taryn Shari Hayhoe. I believe she checked me out online for a bit and found my new fan page called Simple Social Skills. She asked a question about marketing her business called Chadwick Coaching, I helped, and then we connected as friends on Facebook. Then yesterday I asked for some helping to test something on skype and Janet volunteered. And then after connecting on skype we got chatting…as new friends do :-)
After a while she asked me a very good question, “where is my wishlist?” And then she pressed me to tell her what I needed and I told her that it was airtime :-)

So, Janet…let me take this opportunity to officially thank you for the conversation, the new friendship and the airtime.

There is something else very powerful that is coming out of our connection but that will be the subject of another blog post.

Tagging On Facebook…My Favourite Tip Right Now!

Howzit?

In the last few weeks I have shown a number of my friends my favourite Facebook tip of the moment…TAGGING. This week my friend Marlene inboxed me to ask how so I thought a blog post was in order so more people could get helped at the same time.

Now you probably are aware that you can tag your friends in pictures that you post, well there is so much more you can do. In fact you can tag any ‘post’ that you create.

By post I am referring to:

1. Status updates
2. Writing on someone’s wall (also on a group, page or event wall)
3. Sharing a link

Basically anywhere where Facebook asks you, “what’s on your mind?” or tells you to “write something…” you can tag.

What do I mean by tagging?

Have you ever seen someone’s status referring to someone or something but it comes up in blue? Well, that is a tag and it is cool because it acts as a hyperlink. A hyperlink is cool because clicking it takes you straight to that person’s profile or the group or page that has been tagged.

What are the benefits of tagging?

1. Tagging saves time. The power of social media is sharing stuff with your friends. So, if you are talking about someone or something your friends are interested in tagging saves them from having to search for what you have spoken about. They just click the blue hyperlink and they go to the page in question.
2. Tagging notifies the person that you have tagged. That way they will know that you have publicly ‘bigged them up’ or thanked them for something and they can comment on your post.
3. These 2 things combined make your post more newsworthy and will show up higher on news feeds meaning what you are sharing could reach more people.

Who and what can you tag?

1. Your friends
2. The groups you belong to (or have created)
3. The pages you like (or are admin of)
4. The events you have RSVP’ed to (or are hosting)

How do you tag?

It is SO SIMPLE!

1. In your “write something…” or “what’s on your mind?” window you type the @ sign and immediately start typing the name of the person, page, group or event you would like to tag (NO SPACES)
2. Then a drop down will appear and Facebook will tell you that it is “loading…”
3. You simply wait for the right name to appear and click on it.
4. Then you click ’share’ to create the post and when it appears your tag will appear in blue….EASY PEASY!

Video Marketing Mastermind Group

Hey Friends,

A few weeks ago my friend Haroun Kola and I hosted a webinar about using social media to create an online brand. We had so much fun that we decided we want to continue supporting our community with this type of information.

So in harmony with the spirit of Nu-buntu and the philosophy of LEARN…PRACTICE…TEACH (repeat) we have decided to create a Master Mind Group focusing Video Marketing.

The concept of Mastermind Groups was introduced by Napoleon Hill in his timeless classic, “Think And Grow Rich”. He wrote:

So, if you know me well you have heard me talk for AGES about having a reality show, and do I have one yet…NO! So, basically this is me saying that I am tired of living in my head I am going ahead with what I have and having faith that the help I need will come.

I want to create 2 shows, one about my life living without money, that one will be called No Money Guy. The other will be about Ubuntu in the modern world and it will tell stories of people projects and businesses that make the world better.
So, if there is anyone out there who knows about making TV, Film, online videos…anything of that nature and you wanna be a part of creating reality show…lemme know! Even if you just want to help me brainstorm and get some of my ideas into some kind of proposal or pitch that would be extremely valuable. Thank you.

Dear Oprah & The People Who Make Up The 6 Degrees Of Separation Between My Dream & Her

I am praying for a miracle and hoping that you can help me. If you believe in miracles too please do what you can to help me.

My name is Adin, and I live in Cape Town in South Africa. I am trying to enter the Your OWN Show competition with Oprah and Mark Burnett. It’s a reality show talent search where the winner gets their own talk show on the Oprah Winfrey Network! The trouble is that my application was rejected because I am not a US resident and don’t have the right to work in the states.

The thing is, I don’t want and can’t accept a salary because I am one year into a 5 year experiment to live without money! (you can check out my website www.adin.co.za) As the No Money Guy, I would be happy to ‘work’ in the states but because I wasn’t getting paid would that not bypass the green card / right to work situation?
So, I am hoping that the producers, or Oprah herself would make an exception for me if they knew my unique circumstances.

My show will be about making a difference in the world and that would be reward enough for doing it.

I tried calling Harpo Studios but didn’t get very far :-(

Here is a brief synopsis for the the show I intend hosting:

Welcome to Nu-buntu, ‘Change the World TV!’

Oprah pioneered ‘Change Your Life TV’ and this is how I intend to fill the space she created.
Nu-buntu is part Talk Show, part Reality Show with a bit of Social Media thrown in. This opportunity is like Idols for Talk Show hosts, my show will be like Idols for people making a difference.

I believe the world needs a new kind of celebrity. Move over David Beckham & Beyonce, Nu-buntu will create Celebrity Do-gooders & Social Celebrities.
Content for the show will be sourced from an online community. This community & the show itself will support & showcase people who use their lives to make a difference in the world.

Nu-buntu is inspired by an ancient African Philosophy called Ubuntu, which can be summed up by the following 2 statements: ‘I am because you are’ & ‘I am a person through other persons’.
Nu-buntu is Ubuntu in the 21st Century

My Experience Of Inspirational Breathwork At The Hands Of Jean-Pierre Hartmann

First, a little history:

A few months ago I met a guy called Jean-Pierre Hartmann. He added me on Facebook after hearing about my story. In fact, that isn’t exactly how it happened…
He heard about my story, thought I was an urban legend, then overheard me talking about my tattoos at a mutual friends beach party. He then contacted me on FB when he new I was real! :-)

JP was intrigued by my experiment, and after having some experience on the Talent Exchange (AKA: Community Exchange System, www.ces.org.za) offered me a trade. JP is an inspired massage therapist and breathworker, and offered me the following deal – one massage for a review on his fan page, Jean-Pierre’s Massage & Breathwork – and I agreed.

I found JP to be very warm and kind, the kind of person I would like to be friends with (which we are now…not just on FB) :-) I was keen to experience more of his work. I had to come up with another thing to trade…

My friends at Consciousness Coaching had recently offered me 5 of their 4-day personal growth and consciousness development programs called Master 1 – the Awareness Process. Here is a video that I put on Youtube explaining in more detail.

I have just finished the first 5 Breathwork sessions and I can say that they were amazing! The following is from a review I just posted on JP’s fan page, Jean-Pierre’s Massage & Breathwork.

My Review:

I think I am ready to talk about my experience of Inspirational Breathwork. I have completed a course of 5 sessions and I am glad that I waited until the end to write this review. It really is difficult to put into words but I am going to my best.

First, I had no real idea of how I breathed before going to see JP, and was a little shocked when I learned how restricted my breathing was. It isn’t something we think about much, so I am real grateful for the awareness.

I am not going to talk about the technique or the practice, I am just going to share my experience and what I got out of it.
In each session I had an amazing sense of connectedness to my body that I have never experienced before. I could literally feel energy moving right through my whole body. There was such a sense of aliveness and peace at the end of each session. But what I found most valuable about Inspirational Breathwork was that it allowed and supported me in feeling whatever was going on (mentally, emotionally & physically) without intellectualising it. I spend so much time in my head usually, so this was a great relief and release. Often I couldn’t even describe or name the feeling but I knew that I was feeling it and, more importantly, I knew that it was ok to be feeling it.
I also moved through some very interesting stuff during the 5 weeks. I gained clarity, made some decisions and connected to my purpose in a way that I haven’t done in a long time. The confusion and judgement that I carried before the 5 sessions has gone. Now I am in a weird, yet comfortable space of knowing what I know and knowing what I don’t know…and I am at peace with that. (I hope that makes sense)

Now I can’t wait for my rebalancing sessions to begin!

I am not joking, I really need a new computer. I mean really really! My laptop has been giving me shit for the last while, and I have had enough! I have a world-changing project to run and I need equipment I can rely on.
